GMC IN THE NEWS

Small Class, Big Names: YCCC Launches Global Media Programme.  Sing Tao Daily, June 30, 2010.

PROGRAMME CHARACTERISTICS

One of the most interesting aspects of the YCCC's Global Media and Communication (GMC) Programme lies in the critical exploration of how the media function in different parts of the world and the dominant forms of journalism practice in the global context. On successful completion of this Associate Degree (AD) Programme, our students will be able to compare and contrast the differing perspectives on current events offered by journalists in different countries (such as the traditional Western vs non-Western viewpoints), and critically assess the impact of globalisation and commercialisation on the world journalism industry. The programme is designed to prepare our students for further study and employment in media and communication related professions anywhere in the world.

As a majority of Hong Kong's AD Programmes in Media mainly focuses on local context, this Global Media and Communication programme at YCCC is pioneering as far as we know in any other community colleges in Hong Kong. With respect to the programme characteristics, our AD Programme also provides students an opportunity for an investigative study in a global media capital of the world outside of the students' country of origin. The summer field study in global media & communication encourages open-minded students to cross borders whether they are intellectual, geographical, political, cultural or ethnic (or in some cases all of them and many others). The field study component introduces students to the different media systems that exist around the globe today. It provides a first-hand examination of processes of globalisation in relation to organisation, production, consumption and representation in media and communication. Meanwhile, our elective courses such as Reporting in China and Investigative Journalism will flexibly tailor the programme to develop specialist interests. Please click here for more information about the GMC programme structure for 2010-11.

Overall, the YCCC Global Media and Communication Programme aims to help students recognize the vast and rapid changes taking place in global journalism across media systems on all continents. As our students look at how these global media systems interact, they will develop a deeper awareness of how the Hong Kong media fit within them. It is the GMC Programme's expectation that our graduates from Hong Kong and elsewhere will understand how to deal with the main issues confronting global journalists, media organizations, audiences, and others in the media world.
